Bonaire

I’ve made a couple of week-long diving trips to Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. Bonaire is widely regarded as some of the best diving in Caribbean because it has had a protected marine park for more than 40 years. Most visitors choose to shore dive using a small pickup truck as a base of operations for a group of up to four people. Deciding where to dive is as simple as “drive, look for a yellow rock (these mark the dive sites), pull over, dive, repeat.” Boat diving is also available and is the only way to reach Klein (Little) Bonaire, a small island just off the coast of the larger island. There are some interesting things to do on land as well. Bonaire has been producing salt since the time of slavery, so there are some interesting historical sites, as well as a rugged park on the north part of the island.
